What’s a food forest?

A food forest is an ecosystem that is designed to grow a diverse set of perennial food crops while providing for its own needs so that minimal maintenance is required. This is achieved by including plants that improve soil fertility, attract beneficial insects, deter pests, out-compete weeds, and provide mulch. The garden is designed so that each plant’s sunlight, water, and soil requirements are met by adapting to, or modifying, the existing site conditions.
